Dr. “A” Classen
Bio: I am a 48yearold pediatrician. I grew up in Kinston, NC. My father, at age 75, continues to practice orthopedic surgery and to precept residents from the East Carolina School of Medicine. My grandfather was a pediatrician near Philadelphia practicing into his 80s. I hope to follow in their footsteps. I attended Wellesley College, double majoring in English and Biochemistry. I graduate cum laude in English and won the Dr. Leila C Knox prize for Biochemistry. I was elected to Sigma Xi. After college, I completed medical school at UNC Chapel Hill and then moved to California. I completed an internship at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco and a residency at UCSF Throughout my medical training, I had an interest in children with special needs. After residency, I worked at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City as a general pediatrician, a Communication Consultant, and at the regional level, teaching courses on patient provider communication and motivational interviewing. In 2002, I moved to the nonprofit Coastside Clinic working as a general pediatrician until moving to NC in 2004. In NC, I worked as a general pediatrician until 2006 when I started Kids Count Pediatrics in Elkin. I wanted to start a practice in the medical home model which I was very familiar with from working at Kaiser. Since its inception, Kids Count Pediatrics, PLLC has grown from a single pediatrician to three pediatric providers, an integrated LPC providing full time mental health care, a full time colocated speech and occupational therapist as well as a colocated speech pathologist. We have become a NCQA certified Level III medical home. We recently were named an Innovating and Promising Medical Home by the AAP. We have students from Wake Forest and UNCCH who rotate through the practice as well as PA and NP students from several schools.
